KinoKino finds new home

The 5th edition of the KinoKino Int. Film Festival for Children will take place in Zagreb from May 7th – 10th 2020, again offering four days of fun activities and bringing films from around the world to the cinema theatres of Zagreb. Only recently, KinoKino’s future was still at stake…

Last year was a turning point for the Zagreb Film Festival’s creative team which is also the team behind the KinoKino Festival. After 10 years of running the oldest cinema in town, Cinema Europa was abruptly closed by the City of Zagreb and remains closed to this day. As this venue was the home of most festivals in the Croatian capital, this was a major setback for all cinema-related activities in Zagreb, putting festivals and distributors of independent films in a difficult position.

As a result, the KinoKino team had to take some crucial organisational decisions, resulting in a new date and a new venue. The festival moved from February to May (7th – 10th) and will be held in Cinema Tuškanac and Urania.

Besides the films in competition, the programme of the 5th edition will include around 30 films in various programme sections, including popular selections such as Classics with Guests (presenting some of our dearest childhood titles) and First Time at the Cinema (short animated and live action films for the youngest audience).

Last year’s popular workshop ‘First Steps in Filmmaking’, in which a group of children, mentored by director Čejen Černić, created a script and pitched it to an audience, will now take it one step further. After developing a story submitted for the Croatian Audio-visual Centre’s Open Call for Script Development, this year the script will get a more concrete shape. Also, in a workshop in collaboration with the Šesnić & Turković Studio, the poster for next year’s festival edition will be designed. Which means: KinoKino is determined to keep going!
